About me

I am a veteran with almost 20 YOE designing and deploying enterprise-level applications. I am a strong advocate for the inclusion of UX and web accessibility best practices and I am well-versed in web applications.

Notable Experience

As the company shifted direction, moving from a technology company to an IT company, and with the lack of existing technical guidance at the top level, I made it my goal to create a team that executive leadership could rely on to provide advice, strategy, and support regarding technology initiatives. As Director of Enterprise Architecture, I worked hand-in-hand with business leaders to:

  • Define and communicate the purpose and goals of my department
  • Build and communicate a technology strategy to executive leadership
  • Worked with stakeholders to flesh out requirements from abstract ideas
  • Guide technology usage, best practices, and provisioning (RFP), as well as provide frameworks for implementation or integration
  • Provide oversight and ensure compliance with various standards (Security, Privacy, PCI, SOC, etc.)
  • Principal Software Engineer, Dollar Shave Club
    2018 – 2023

As Principal Engineer, I mentored juniors, architected discreet systems, worked closely with business stakeholders, and supported operations across all engineering disciplines. I was primarily relied on to lead major initiatives, put out priority fires, and remove roadblocks for other team members, keeping projects on track and efficient.

  • I orchestrated the architecture, planning, and execution of the company's Shopify migration, a task that required a unique problem-solving approach. This migration, which was seamlessly executed without disrupting the company's over 1.5 million subscriptions across four regions, resulted in significant annual savings in operational and overhead costs.
  • I successfully tackled the challenge of migrating PayPal subscribers to Shopify, a problem that had stumped other engineering approaches. My innovative solution not only averted a potential loss of $20 million in annual revenue but also showcased my adaptability and quick learning in unfamiliar systems.
  • Pressed by the threat of multiple ADA lawsuits, I leveraged my deep understanding of web accessibility to lead the engineering team in remediating our site's massive backlog of existing ADA issues within one month in an all-hands-on-deck effort. By establishing robust processes and standards, we ensured the company stayed at the forefront of accessibility practices, instilling confidence in our stakeholders.
  • Throughout the changing privacy landscape, I worked with legal to build out processes necessary to mitigate business risk. My diligence in this matter caught several vectors of privacy leakage before the leaks could occur or before much damage was done, saving the company untold legal costs
  • Staff Software Engineer, Deloitte Digital
    2013 – 2018

As a technology consultant, I was regularly challenged to learn new things on every project. This allowed me to learn about how many businesses operated and what their technology needs were. I worked for notable Clients and partners, including Walmart, Macy's, IBM, and Papa Murphy's.

  • Worked as a Team Lead, SME, and Solutions Architect for web technologies, primarily in e-commerce and retail sectors
  • Developed web standards for things like code reviews, coding standards, pull request management, release management
  • Built out key functionality that would allow us to accelerate the execution of projects, such as building a UI Framework and standardizing library tools
  • Led the efforts to move Deloitte Digital to Adobe Experience Manager. Architecting the CMS modeling and designing the framework of components and tools used within the system
  • Senior Software Engineer, MSNBC (contractor)
    2012 – 2013

When MSNBC was still joint-owned by NBC and Microsoft, I was hired to completely re-design their election site. I was tasked with increasing performance and reducing downtime they had seen in years past. On election night 2012 the sight saw over 1 million views per hour with no downtime and no reported issues, down from hours of downtime and a multitude of issues in years past. The original code from this project remains the backbone of the current site today.

UX Engineer, ADP; The Cobalt Group
    2009 – 2011

During this period of my career, people who worked on "web code" weren't considered engineers, and JavaScript was just a "toy." Looking to expand my knowledge and promote the adoption of accessibility and UX best practices, I shifted my role from backend/integration-level engineering to front-end engineering and UX.

  • Founded a group within the company to further explore and promote the importance of this field of science and the need for greater accessibility focus across the web
  • Worked with traditional engineers to educate them on why front-end engineering is just as important and how to succeed using its capability
  • Senior Software Engineer, Microsoft (contractor)
    2008 – 2008

Contributed to open-source projects, such as Drupal and Joomla, to add support for MSSQL and assist in the adoption of Windows support in the PHP core.

Aviation Electrician's Mate 3rd Class, US Navy
    1999 – 2003

Aviation Electrician's Mate 3rd class (E4), Discharged Honorably (RE1), Protected Veteran Status

    Notable Projects

Led the architecture, planning, and execution of the company's Shopify migration from a previously proprietary e-commerce system, which was executed after six months of preparation. The project deployed with no interruption to the company's over 2 million subscriptions across four regions, saving the company millions YoY in operational and overhead costs.

Shopify and other adjacent vendors associated with the migration cited this as the most successful migration of a subscription provider, especially when considering the number of subscriptions migrated and TTL for execution, six months.

When MSNBC brought me on, they wanted to completely re-design their election site. They were also looking to increase performance and reduce downtime due to the traffic they receive on election night. On election night, we saw over 1 million views per hour with no downtime and no reported issues. To this day, almost all of the original UI code from this project remains the backbone of the current site.
